The Guerilla Gym program is a mobile, community health and wellbeing service. Essentially, it’s a ‘pop-up’ gym which we take on the road and to the streets, providing hosted boxing and fitness classes. The classes, instruction and equipment is all free, and our mobility makes the Guerilla Gym accessible and available to a range of suburbs and communities in and around Cairns.
The Streets Movement Organisation launched the Guerilla Gym in Bentley Park in mid 2016. The program operates across the region, coming to you in various local parks and spaces, with three different classes for youth, men and women to participate in. The Guerilla Gym operates every Monday and Friday from 5.30pm. Venues change, so watch our timetable or Facebook account to stay up to date.
How does it work? By reusing and repurposing old materials, to make them useful again. It’s upcycling and it’s all a part of our hand up and not hand out service. We take recycled materials from local landfills and scrap yards and use our initiative and innovation to fashion these materials into health and fitness equipment for community use.
The Guerrilla Gym is built to be a completely dismountable service. It has been designed and constructed to enable The Streets Movement crew to be able to be build it up and take it down in the space of under half an hour.
